The dog days of summer in Mid-Missouri can be tough on your yard, but that doesn’t mean your curb appeal has to fade with the season. In fact, late summer is a prime time to refresh your landscaping—especially if you’re thinking about selling your home before fall.
Here are a few tips to help your property look its best and stand out to buyers.
August heat can be hard on grass, but a little TLC goes a long way.
Water deeply 2–3 times a week rather than frequent, shallow watering.
Mow high (around 3 inches) to help grass retain moisture and resist weeds.
Apply a late-summer fertilizer to strengthen roots before cooler weather.
Just because spring and early summer blooms are fading doesn’t mean your yard has to lose its vibrancy.
Plant hardy flowers like black-eyed Susans, coneflowers, or zinnias.
Incorporate container gardens with mums or ornamental grasses for pops of seasonal color.
Refresh mulch around flower beds to make colors stand out and help retain soil moisture.
Buyers notice well-maintained greenery.
Remove any dead branches or overgrown limbs.
Shape bushes for a clean, manicured look.
Keep shrubs from blocking windows or walkways, which can make the home feel more open and inviting.
Your front entrance sets the tone for the whole showing.
Add a seasonal wreath or welcome mat.
Place a pair of planters with late-summer blooms on either side of the door.
Touch up any peeling paint on the front door or trim.
Evening showings happen more often as days get shorter, so make sure your outdoor lighting is working and inviting.
Install solar path lights along the walkway.
Replace burnt-out porch bulbs with warm-toned LEDs.
Consider adding landscape lighting to highlight trees or architectural features.
Late summer landscaping isn’t just about making your yard look nice—it’s about creating a lasting first impression that can add value to your home. A few simple updates can make your property stand out in listing photos and in person, helping you attract more buyers.
